Serving Gurnee Since 1860
In 1860, a few dedicated people began what is now known as Gurnee Community Church. Nineteen years later, when the population of Gurnee was fewer than 100 souls, the building, shown here, was built on Kilbourne Road. The original white frame church was moved to Grand Avenue in 1923, where it was remodeled and enlarged. On November 24, 1924, the church was rededicated.
As Gurnee grew, so did the need to broaden the church's mission. In 1953, the south wing (currently the location of the administrative offices) was built. With the building of the north classroom wing, and the Fellowship Hall in 1960, the old white frame church was no longer needed.
In 1977 a new sanctuary and community room were dedicated. The stained glass windows in the sanctuary were preserved from the original church as a reminder of our connection with past Christians of our community. The new community room became home to many Gurnee organizations.
As the size of the congregation grew, so did the need for a larger professional staff. A second full-time minister was added in the 1970s, a music director in 1994, a youth pastor in 1995 and a full-time children's ministry director in 1999.
With continual growth once again through God’s guidance, Gurnee Community Church found itself needing to expand its physical plan to serve the expanding needs of the church community. In 2000 the congregation approved a building expansion program which led to a new 18,000 square foot addition provideing a new sanctuary, additional classroom space, nursery, a chapel and space for future development. With the completion of this project plans were made to convert the current sanctuary into a Family Life Center for recreational and fellowship activities for youth and adults alike.
